How to Play

Your goal is simple: unscramble the board and find valid 5-letter words to maximize your score. How you approach this depends on your chosen mode:

• Speed Mode (5 Min): This is a pure word sprint. Speed is everything. Your focus is on firing off words as fast as possible before the clock hits zero to trigger massive streak multipliers.
• Zen Mode (Untimed): This is all about digging deep into your vocabulary. There is no clock and no rush. Take your time, hunt for rare Onyx words, and see if you can completely clear the board.

Grid Mechanics

• The Frame: The first and last letters of every row are locked. You must type 5-letter dictionary words that start and end with those exact letters.
• Direct Typing: Use the on-screen or physical keyboard. Your guess will automatically highlight the row that matches the first letter you type.
• Row Counters: Each row tracks the words you have found. In Speed Mode, this is a total count. In Zen Mode, it shows your completion fraction for that row.
• Linked Rows (🔗): If rows share identical start and end letters, they link. Finding a word here populates both rows simultaneously for double the points!
• Dead Rows: Grayed-out rows mean zero valid 5-letter words exist in the dictionary for that letter combination. They are disabled so you don't waste time.

The Hint System

• Ghost Letters: Every correct guess helps solve the rest of the board. The middle three letters of your valid word will automatically appear as faded "ghost hints" in other rows if they belong in the exact same spots.
• Chain Reactions: Use these new hints to guess your next word. Finding one correct answer usually gives you the missing pieces you need to unlock the next row!

Scoring & Bonuses

The game uses a master dictionary of roughly 13,000 words. About 5,700 are considered "common," while the rest are "obscure."

• Bounty Badges (Base Score): Points per word scale dynamically based on difficulty. Rows with plenty of common words have Green badges (~20+ points). Tougher rows feature Orange or Red badges (up to ~100+ points).
• Speed Multipliers: (Speed Mode Only). Guess 3 words quickly (under 15 seconds apart) to catch fire. While active, your base points are multiplied by 2x! Waiting longer than 20 seconds or guessing an invalid word breaks the streak.
• Time Extensions: (Speed Mode Only). Guessing an obscure vocabulary word grants a +15 second time extension to keep your run alive.
• Row Clear Bounties: (Zen Mode Only). Find 100% of the common words in a row to turn the row Gold and earn a massive +500 point bonus.
• Onyx Words: Finding rare, obscure words awards big base points and stamps a ✦ symbol on your scorecard. In Zen Mode, they are treated as secret bonus words that don't affect your Gold Row fraction.
• Black Bonus Rows: If a row has absolutely zero "common" words in the dictionary, it turns dark (Onyx). Every valid guess in these brutal rows awards massive base points (300+ points).

Winning Tips

• Fish for Hints: Don't get stuck staring at a hard row. Guess common words in easy (Green) rows to spawn helpful ghost hints across the tougher sections of the board.
• Know Your Mode: In Speed Mode, focus on finding fast, easy words to keep your 2x multiplier alive. In Zen Mode, focus methodically on one row at a time to secure those +500 point clear bounties.
• Target Rare Rows: Check the colored badges immediately at launch. Prioritize Red or Black rows first to rack up massive point infusions.

About the Game

Inspired by "Gefüllte Kalbsbrust"
5 IN 5 IN 5 is a digital reimagining of a classic German pen-and-paper word game called Gefüllte Kalbsbrust (which translates directly to "Stuffed Breast of Veal").

In the original parlor game, a single long word is written down the left side of a page, and then written backwards up the right side. Players then race to "stuff" the inside of the word by filling the space between the outer letters to create new, valid words. We took that elegant mechanical "frame" and cranked up the speed.
